「緑屋」

私のアパートの近くに新しい日本の乾物屋（かんぶつや；grocery store）があります。名前は「緑屋」です。

とても便利です。日本の食べ物と飲み物があります。

日本の映画とテレビ番組もあります。

私は去年台湾でお握りを初めてたべました。「緑屋」のお握り類似で、おいしいです。いろいろな食べ物があります。明るい色もたくさんあります。

 おもしろくて、すてきなストアです。

世界で一番いい猫

私は初めてパミナにあったことを思い出します。三年前に妻とブルックリンのアニマルシェルターへボランティア活動(かつどう)に行きました。猫をもらうつもりはぜんぜんありませんでした。妻は猫がよく好きですから、私は妻に「猫をもらってはいけません」と言いました。でも、シェルターに着いて、パミナと遊んだら、うちへ連れて行かなければなりませんでした。

子どもの時、家族は何時も猫が二三びきがいましたが、自分で猫の世話をしてあげたことがありませんでした。パミナとうちへ帰ったら、すぐ用事がたくさんありました。猫の食べ物や猫トイレを買わなければなりませんでした。

パミナは親切で、きれいな猫です。でも、うちへ帰ったら、病気だったことに気がつきました。薬を買わなければなりません。妻は薬の飲み方を説明しました。それから、私は毎日二回パミナに薬をあげました。パミナはだんだん元気になりました。私とパミナもいい友達になりました。

パミナをもらった時、小さくて、若い猫でした。今大きくなりましたが、初めてあったことを忘れられません。

「天国と地獄」

黒澤明（くろさわあきら）は1963年に「天国と地獄」（てんごくとじごく）を作りました。すてきな映画です。英語のタイトルは「High and Low」です。でも、「天国と地獄」は英語で「Heaven and Hell」です。同じじゃありません。どうしてタイトルを変えましたか。

この映画の主人公（しゅじんとう；protagonist）の名前は権藤金吾（ごんどうきんご）です。権藤さんのうちは高い山にあります。そして、権藤さんはお金がたくさんありますから、生活も高いです。犯人（はんにん；criminal）は権藤さんのうちの下に住んでいます。お金がありません。それから、犯人は権藤さんが嫌いです。犯人は地獄に住んでいますが、権藤さんは天国にすんでいます。

About Communication

1. What do you expect to learn from this pod-casting project? (List as much as possible.)
2. What does "communication" mean to you?

With this podcast project, I hope to both learn new material and learn how to present that material effectively.  This involves, firstly, receiving a bulk of information, and secondly, transmitting a selection of that information in an engaging and understandable way.  Communication thus comes in two stages for this project: reception and retransmission.  Attention must be paid at each stage lest we misconstrue the information we are receiving or misrepresent it while conveying it.  Nevertheless, the biggest part of the job lies in between these two stages, when we must decide which pieces of received information we should include in our podcast.  If we include too much material we will overwhelm the viewer and harm the presentation, but if we include too little material the results will be boring.  We should find a way to include a substantial range of information that remains easy to follow and understand.  In addition, because we are only first-year Japanese students, we have to take care not to include too much new vocabulary.  If we make that mistake, our fellow students will not be able to understand our podcast.  All new vocabulary words should appear on the screen accompanied by their English equivalent as they are being spoken.  At the same time, because we also hope to target a Japanese audience, we must maximize our use of the limited vocabulary that we already possess.  If we are able to fluently use what Japanese knowledge we have learned so far, it will make the best presentation possible to Japanese viewers.  This means that we should not try to tackle subjects too complex for our level of Japanese grammar and vocabulary.

More generally, I think communication always involves listening and speaking, receiving and conveying.  As it happens, this matches the subject of our podcast quite closely: we hope to examine how Japanese media and culture has influenced American media and culture, as well as vice-versa.

大丈夫

「大丈夫」は英語で "all right, okay, safe" です。でも、中国語で強者です。一番いい禅師は禅宗の語錄で「大丈夫」と呼ばれます。「丈夫」は男の人や主人です。それから、どうして「大丈夫」は "all right" を意味しますか。

白隠慧鶴の絵

先月ニューヨークの日本協会へ行きました。白隠慧鶴の絵を展示しました。白隠は17世紀の禅師でした。展示に絵がたくさんありました。例えば：
